About
I have been teaching piano, voice, and organ for over 10 years, and have experience with students from 5 to 75. I especially enjoy teaching teenagers and adults students, whether they are advanced and need professional performance coaching, are total beginners, or are returning to music after several years away.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I have a trial lesson with each student in which I assess musical experience and aptitude, learn a bit about personality and temperament, and design a course of study tailored to the student.
I use piano method books, but adapt frequently with supplemental material as I learn more about the student. Each student is unique, so each curriculum should be unique.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in music performance and pedagogy from Dordt University with an emphasis in piano and organ.
I also hold a degree in Piano Pedagogy from Grand Valley State University, where I studied with Helen Marlais, author of the Succeeding at the Piano method books.
My vocal experience comes from singing in the Grand Rapids (Michigan) symphony and opera choruses, teaching voice lessons in numerous studios throughout Michigan and Minnesota, and directing many amateur and professional musical theatre productions.

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from age 4 to age 74. I've taught beginners of all ages who have never touched an instrument, adults returning to singing or playing after many years away, and award-winning piano and voice students who've won concerto competitions and been awarded college scholarships.
