About

I'm a graduate of Musician's Institute in Los Angeles and I'm a full time professional bass player. Bands I play with in Austin include Trio Verde, Tad Hillin, Shakedown, and Power Union. I have 2 decades of teaching experience, and I love getting emails like this: "Good afternoon, just wanted to say I really enjoyed the lesson, I believe you are the teacher to get me to the next level. Looking forward to the next lesson Thank You so much." Let's do some lessons! I've also written music for many of the bands I've played in, and I recorded & produced Trio Verde's EP. I addition to bass & theory I also do lessons for songwriting and production.

My teaching resume is here: http://www.robroeder.com/teaching.htm

My songwriting / production resume is here: http://www.robroeder.com/tracks.htm

I've loved music for as long as I can remember, and I've also found that teaching helps me focus my musical knowledge - one great way to really understand something is to explain it to someone else.

Rob was my first teacher and anything Ive learned of substance, it was because of Robs instruction, influence and friendship. I loved how Rob was able to find an approach to help me understand chord theory, which enabled me to understand the foundations of bass playing, early on. He also taught me to read music better and understand harmonies. With my lessons from Rob, I was able to start playing out at the local blues jam very early on, which gave me the confidence and experience to build on and, since then, Ive been in several local bands and continue to draw on principles Rob taught me. He is also the most supportive teacher and friend a person could want. I highly recommend him to anyone of any age who wants to play bass from raw beginner to advanced professional.

Learning music with Rob is an absolute joy. He speaks to a breadth of musical subjects with depth and clarity, can convey concepts in an approachable way, and he is always open minded and encouraging. I primarily learned bass guitar with Rob but he also showed me bits of recording, songwriting and arrangement as well; fleshing out more musical context for me. Highly recommended!

    Frequently asked questions

I need to get to know them, to find out about their musical goals, and to work up a personalized game plan to get them to those goals.

I'm a graduate of Musician's Institute in Los Angeles, and I have a lot of experience playing bass in a lot of bands. I've written music for many of the bands I've played in, and I write and produce music for stock music libraries.

    Hour lesson - $50

    30 minute lesson - $30

Musician's Institute had a progarm that would send their students out to teach beginners.

All ages, shapes & sizes, from retired people to small children, from people hoping to turn pro to people who just want to play along with their favorite songs at home, and pretty much all points in between.

That's easy. This morning an intermediate student who's learning to play from chord symbols said at the end of the lesson: "That was great! I had a blast!" I love moments like that.

For bass, get a real bass player, avoid guitar players who play a little bass on the side.

For theory, songwriting, & production, someone who has some experience with the kind of music you like.

Why they are considering lessons, what their goals are, what they're hoping to get from the lessons, what kind of learning environment they like.
