Ian D. says, "I first took lessons with Bob Wolfman back in 1994, after spotting a flyer near my school. I called him on a whim, seeking someone who could adeptly teach both technique and theory, especially in blues and jazz guitar. Bob was a revelation—his fingers and brain worked at lightning speed, and I always left each lesson feeling enriched with new knowledge. After graduating, I stopped taking lessons, but the pandemic prompted me to reconnect with Bob for online lessons. Decades later, I am thrilled to find that Bob's charm, personality, and talent for guitar instruction haven't changed a bit. For anyone aspiring to become an accomplished, well-rounded guitar player, I wholeheartedly recommend Bob. His expertise spans over the years and adapts with time, making him an excellent choice for both beginners and seasoned players. You definitely won't regret it!" Read more

Keith H. says, "I never thought at the start of this journey that I'd be playing classical music on a mandolin, but often, it really fits, and in general, it's helped to develop a kind of musicianship that I find I can apply to anything else I want to play. Adam is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic instructor about music and music history. He supports a number of group projects (focusing on several different styles including classical, Celtic, and Klezmer) for students, which are an excellent way to learn." Read more

Why Choose Homeschool Piano? HomeSchoolPiano has been designed to teach even absolute beginners how to play the piano. Built on solid methodology that integrates throughout all 18 units, the rhythms and technique that you learn at the beginning of each unit carry over into the reading, song and improvisation learned later in the unit. HomeSchoolPiano is different than other piano methods because we focus on developing the entire musician. Far too often students learn only to read music and their musical ear suffers. HomeSchoolPiano develops the ear, reading, improvisation and composition skills of each student equally which makes them a bet

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Reposting my review due to some grammar errors! My experience with Bob Wolfman has been fantastic. I’ve gotten so much better at playing the guitar and I’ve learned more in the past 3 months with Bob than all my previous years before studying with him. As an almost intermediate player, I didn’t have a lot of music theory knowledge, and couldn’t improvise very well. Learning music theory with Bob was actually fun, and he explains things that initially seem super complicated in a way that’s easy to understand. Not only that, but now I’m applying the theory I've learned from Bob in actual music, and being able to implement things he taught me on the fly. This has given me a ton of confidence as a player. In addition to the music theory, my chord vocabulary and licks I can play on the fly have astronomically increased as well. I can’t recommend Wolfman’s School of Music enough! If you’re at all serious about learning to play guitar, work with Bob!

My story: About 8 years ago I decided I wanted to learn to sing. I found Robins Music Studio and Robin Hudson on line. I explained to Robin that I thought I was tone dear and could not read music. I have a handicap of being blind in one eye and poor vision in the other. Robin assured me that she could teach me to sing. She has to be the most patient person I ever met. Each lesson she would spend a little extra time with me. Always encouraging and inspiring me -- and finding new ways to help me reach my goals. Week after week she would enlarge my music so I could read it. She would sing in my ear so I could hear how the notes went. We would clap our hands and tap our feet to learn rhythms of each song. Whatever help I needed, Robin found a way to help me. I fee Robin went above and beyond knowing how badly I wanted to sing! She is an incredible and amazing teacher that gives from her heart to each of her students. During recital I have witnessed how her other students have grown. The Youth Choir at our church is being taught by Robin and they sing and play handbells at the same time! She has also taught two young ladies how to play the xylophone! Robin has enriched my life tremendously and I recommend her highly. Denise Bellerose
